オリンピックに向けて、職場で開かれている英語研修。毎週の宿題は、英字新聞から記事を一つ選んで読解すること。

今日選んだのは、オーストラリアの選挙でリベラル派が躍進したという記事ですが、政治関連の記事は、政党の現状勢力図を知っていないと理解が難しいです。

また、題名からは「時代の転換期」というポジティブな内容を先入観で持っていたのですが、空軍の関与をリベラル党の当選者が追及されるなど、記事の後半ではドタバタパ劇を報じていました。

先入観で塗り固められた頭を切り替えるため、何度も記事を読み返す羽目になりました。まっさらな状態で記事と向き合う方ことが大切ですね。試験のときはネガティブな問題が出ることはないので、スピード重視で内容を予想しながら読んた方がいいのかもしれませんが。

 

Australian Prime Minister John Howard’s Liberal Party scored a decisive by-election win Saturday, its popularity apparently undented by a Parliamentary row over ministerial ethics.

Election officials said with 80 percent of the vote counted, Liberal candidate, Jackie kelly beat former Labor Party minister Ross Free with 56.34 percent of the vote after sharing out second-preference votes in Sydney’s Lindsay constituncy.

The result represented a swing for the Liberals of almost 5 percent on top of a 11.4 percent swing Kelly achieved in the traditionally safe Labor seat in the March general election.

In third  place, leading a long list of minor candidates, was the Australians Against Further Immigration party, which supports maverick member of Parliament Pauline Hanson in her campaign to end immigration from Asia. The party won 6.1 percent of the vote.
