本日は、事故の話に関連して、The article will be appearing on Thursday. という表現がありました。

「新聞に載るよ」というような言い方でしょうか。

ここでは「記事」が主語になっているのが面白いですね。

 

一般に日本語では「人」「生物」を主語とする一方、英語では一部の動詞を除いて、「生物」でも「無生物」でも主語にすることができるようです。

 

使役動詞
The fact led me to think that he was liar. / その事実から、私は彼がうそつきだと考えるようになった。

「許す」
occasional gaps allow passage through the mountain. / ところどころに峠道があるおかげで、山を越すことができる。
The low does not permit the sale of such drags. / そのような薬物の販売は法により許可されていない。

「(費用・時間・手間) がかかる」
How much will cost to send this letter by air mail? / この手紙は航空便でいくらかかりますか?
The work took me three hours. = It took me three hours to do the work. / その仕事をするのに三時間を要した。

 

「連れて来る(行く)」
What has brought you here? = What did you come here for? / 君はいったい何をしにここはへ来たのだ?
Five minutes walk brought us to the lake. / 私たちは五分歩くと湖に着いた。
This street will take you to the theater. = If you go along this street, you will be able to get to the theater./ この通りを行けば、劇場へ行けます。

 

妨げる
A heavy snow kept (prevented) them from going to the market. = because of a heavy snow, they couid not go to the market. / 大雪のため彼らは市場に行けなかった。
Still the continuing snow prevented the helicopters from taking off. / 降りしきる雪のために、ヘリコプターは離陸出来なかった。

 

(ある状態に)しておく
The noise kept me awake all night. / 騒がしくて一晩中眠れなかった。
The news left him uneasy.

 

示す、明らかにする
The thermometer says 5 degrees below zero. / 温度計では零下五度だ
Biology reveals the harmony of nature. / 生物学で、今まで分からなかった自然の調和が明らかになった。
A close study showed that the crops would be scanty this fall. / 詳細に調査した結果、今秋の収穫は悪い見込みであることが判明した

 

～を想起させる、連想させる
This reminds me of the small village I once lived in Southern England.
= When I see this, I remember the small village …/ これを見ると、私は昔住んでいた南イングランドの村を思い出す
The sound reminded me that it was already my bedtime. / その音を聞いて、私はもう寝る時刻になったのを思い出した。

The peach of music suggests a still, moonlighted night. / この曲は静かな月の夜を思わせる

 

感情を表す
The success delighted his father.=
His father was delighted at the success.

Her refusal disappointed him.
His letter surprised her.
