今日選んだ記事はアメリカ大統領選挙に関連した記事。政治関連のニュースは基本的な情勢を理解していないと解読出来ません。私の中ではドール氏に対する印象が薄かったので、アドバイスを受けるのはブッシュ氏だと思っていました。逆でした。

本文を読む前に人物情報を記載します。

Robert Joseph Dole is an American  politician, serving as the Republican Leader of the United States Senate from 1985 until 1996.

William Jefferson Clinton is an American politician who served as the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. A member of the Democratic Party, Clinton was known as a New Democrat. Clinton was elected president in 1992, defeating incumbent Republican opponent George H. W. Bush. At age 46, he became the third-youngest president in history.

Bob Dole turned Sarturday to former President George Bush for tips on Sunday’s presidential debate while President Bill Clinton continued to talk down his chances of success and deflect a few lingering controversies ahead of the encounter.

Even though Bush was viewed as having lost his 1992 debates with Clinton, he “is the only Republican with experience debating Bill Clinton, and we thought it was a good idea to get him down” to Bal Harbor, Fla. where Dole has been rehearsing, said Nelson Warfield, a Dole spokesman.

Clinton was preparing at a retreat in Chautauqua, western New York, with former Maine Sen. George Mitchell playing  the role of Dole. When asked Saturday whether he had gotten the better of Mitchell, Clinton replied: “Well, I don’t know. Maybe I got him to a draw.”

After conferring at Dole’s seaside condominium, Bush and Dole, both dressed in blue blazers, emerged to pronounce. Dole ready for what Warfield called the “wily” Clinton.

With Dole consistently lagging 10-20 points in opinion polls and only a month left before the Nov. 5 election, the Dole campaign portrayed the debate as one of the last opportunities to erase Clinton’s lead.
