A Japanese man who was caught trying to smuggle his pet crocodile into the United States while on vacation was given a six-month prison sentence and fined $1,100 Monday in a U.S. district court.

Toru Hattori, 39 , pleaded guilty Aug. 1 to smuggling an endangered species, claiming it was too much trouble to tell U.S. customs.

He was arrested at Los Angeles airport June 19 when customs agents found 1 meter Siamese crocodile, which is protected in 100 countries, bag inside a shoe box that had airholes.
The crocodile died about a week later.

Hattori, a chef and janitor in Japan, had planned a nine-day vacation in the U.S. and said he “could’t leave it at home. It’s not like a dog.”
He had faced up 11 years in prison and a $600,000 fine for the offense.

最初は金儲けが目的の密輸かと思ったのですが、「一緒に旅行に連れて来た」のですね。最終行の up は禁固刑が11年に跳ね上がったことを意味するのかと思ったのですが、過去完了形なので「最高11年の刑に面していた」ということですね。6月で済んで良かったです。
