新しくホストファミリーになるキースに、挨拶のメールを送らなければなりません。学校の事務員さんに、下書きを添削して頂きました。

Dear Keith

How are you.

I’m Kunihiro okubo.

I will am going to stay your home from May 23.

May I visit go to your home at around 1PM on 23th?

I like to go to the movies, traveling.

So  I hope enjoy talking with you about that.

And I like cooking.(But it is not so delicious)

I want to learn some dishes.

My hobbies are watching movies and traveling.

I’m hoping I can talk with you about those and also more different things such as cooking that we both enjoy.

Maybe we can exchange some our receipes.

I’m looking forward to seeing you and enjoy my stay.

Thank you.

 

読み返してみると、一方的に私の用件を羅列していて、随分と唐突な印象を与えていますね。。もっと相手の立場を尊重するべきでした。書き出しは “I” ではなく”you” で書き始めることがポイントですね。

「手紙が書けない」という悩みがある場合は、相手が何を考え感じているか、思いを馳せながら文章を綴ってみると、意外と筆が進むかもしれません。

I’m looking forward to のto は前置詞ですから、it ももちろん置けます。

以下の文は逆の立場で、学生に対してキースを紹介した文がです。「彼 (キース) 」ではなく「学生たち」が主役になっていますね。

His hope for his student is to enjoy their stay and return home with lots of happy stories to share and the desire to return to Canada.

 

 

次の文は、「長野オリンピックの開催中に、海外からのお客さんを受け入れる」という設定で、ホストファミリーが書いた手紙です。

① Introduction (Greeting and Purpose for Writing)

Hello, I hope you are well. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is ~. I have the  pleasure of welcoming you during the Nagano Olympics. It will be the first time we welcome homestay guests and we are really looking forward to meeting you.

② Body (Information to be Conveyed)

Let me tell you about my family. Our family consists of ~(家族の紹介)

Our house is Japanese style. We have tatami mat floors. We sleep on futons. Our toilet is also Japanese style. We hope this will not be a problem for you.

I was also wondering if there are any foods which you think you cannot eat, or anything that you are allergic to. Please let us know so we can plan for your visit.

It will be cold in Nagano when you arrive. Please bring warm clothes and warm shoes. we do not want you to feel cold while you are here.

③ Conclusion (Saying Good-bye)

If you have any questions about Japan. Nagano, or our family, please write to me. We are all looking forward to hearing from you soon and learning about your family.

④ Salutation / s`æljʊtéɪʃən  あいさつ (Very Last Words)

そして以下は、ホストファミリーが帰国したお客さんに、写真を送る際に書いた手紙の例文です。

We hope you are both doing well and that you are getting over the jet lag after returning home from Japan. We enjoyed having you stay with us during the Olympic Winter Games. We hope you enjoyed yourselves, too.

It only seems like yesterday that you were here in Nagano. Doesn’t time fly ?

Do you remember when we went to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City ? Taro took many pictures on that day.

You will find copies of all pictures Taro took at the temple. I hope that when you look at them you will remember all the wonderful times we had together during the Nagano Olympic Winter Games.

Well, things are finally getting back to nomal here in Nagano. But we will never forget the excitement of having the Games in our own city. Also, we will never forget the friendship we shared during your stay in our home.
