【問8】次の英文は、Ken が英語の授業で” My treasure (私の宝物) ” というテーマでスピーチした時のものです。これを読んであとの問いに答えなさい。

My father took this picture on the sports day when I was ten years old. In this picture I’m running in the 50-meter dash.(50メートル走)   Which boy is me ?  Can you tell ?  This fourth one is me.  This picture is my treasure.  Why ?  I’m going to talk about it.

One day, I said to my father, ” I don’t want to join the sports day because I can’t run fast.”  He said to me, ” Did you try to run faster ?  If you practice run every day, you can run faster.”  I could (canの過去形 ) not believe it.  He said, ” You have a lot of time before the sports day.  I can help you, Ken.  [ A ] ”  I said, ” OK .”

We started to practice running together in the park the next day.  My father ran very fast, but I couldn’t.  I asked him, ”  [ B ] ”  Then he said, ” You have to move your arms ① (より素早く).  Also, don’t look at the ground when you are running.”  I practiced for three weeks.  Just before the sports day, he said, ” Now you can run faster.  But I want to tell you one important thing.  Don’t stop running before getting to the finish line.”

The sports day came and my race ② (begin).  After running about thirty meters, I thought I would ( willの過去形 ) win the race.  Just then, I fell  (fallの過去形)  down on the ground and the other three runners passed  (追い越した)   me.  I was so sad and could not get up.  Then I saw my father’s face near the finish line.  He was looking at me.  Suddenly  (突然に)  , I remembered (A) his words.   I got up and started running again and got to finish line.

A few days later, he showed me this picture and said, ” I took this picture because I was so happy.”  I said, ” But I could’t win this race.”  He said ” That’s not important.  I was happy because you didn’t stop running after felling down.”  He smiled and gave it to me.

I always look at this picture when I have some trouble.  Then I remember the race and I can do my best  (最善を尽くす) .  Thank you for listening.
