11歳の頃からインターネットを通して、タリバンによる女性教育に対する弾圧の実情などを訴えてきたマララ・ユフスザイさん。2012年15歳の時、スクールバスに乗っていたところをタリバンの武装グループに襲撃され、重傷を負います。
One day in October, 2012, the group tried to kil her because of her campaign. She was hurt and almost died.

奇跡的に回復した後も、銃弾では自身の行動は止められないとして教育の重要性を訴え続ける彼女に対して、国連は彼女の誕生日である7月12日を「マララ・デー」と名付けました。
The UN decided to call her birthday “Malala day”

2013年、初の「マララ・デー」に、ニューヨークの国連本部で彼女は演壇に立ちます。
On her sixteenth birthday in 2013, she was at the UN to give a speech.

彼女のスピーチ全文を収めた「演説集」を友人から借りたので、本棚に眠っていた「オパマ大統領の2008年勝利演説・2009年就任演説」を併せて読みながら、英語によるスピーチの特徴をまとめてみました。

1.   神への感謝
両者とも神に対する感謝を述べつつ、自分の行いは神の意思と共通である、というニュアンスを漂わせているのは、興味深いところです。

【Malala】 First of all, thank you to God, for whom we all are equal.
まず初めに、その前では私たちみなが平等である神に感謝します。

【Obama】 The time has come to carry forward that precious gift that noble idea, passed on from generatin to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
これまで脈々と受け継がれてきた貴重な贈り物、崇高な理念を次代に伝えていく時が来たのです。それは神から与えられた約束、すなわち、すべての人は平等であり、自由であり、幸福を存分に追求するするチャンスに値する、という約束です。

2.　支援者への感謝
今日という日を迎えることができたのは自身の成果ではなく、支援者たちの成果であるという認識。

【Malala】 Malala day is not my day. Today is the day of every women, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights.
マララ・デーは私の日ではありません。今日は、権利のために声を上げたすべての女性、すべての少年少女の日です。

【Obama】 But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to – it belongs to you.
しかし、この勝利が誰のものか、私は決して忘れません。これは皆さんの勝利なのです。

3.  象徴的な名詞表現
新たな変革が訪れているが、それは私たちが続けている旅の一過程であるという表現。

【Malala】 We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education. No one can stop us.
平和と教育という目的地に向かう私たちの旅は、これからも続きます。私たちを止めることは誰にも出来ません。

【Obama】 Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. This is the journey we continue today. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remarking America.
こうして大勢の男女が苦労を重ね、自らを犠牲にして手がひび割れるまで働いてくれたのです。それはなぜかといえば、後に続く私たちにより良い暮らしを提供するためなのです。旅は今も続いています。今日を機に、私たちはかつての元気を取り戻し、心機一転、新たな決意でアメリカの再生という責務を再開しなければならなりません。

4. 象徴的な動詞の使用
silence「沈黙させる」という他動詞を受身形にして「意見を抑え込まれた人々」と表現しています。silenceの対義語としてhear「聞く」を受身形あるいは使役動詞makeを使うことで、「聞かせる」「 意見を反映させる」という意味を持たせています。

【Malala】 We realise the importance of light when we are silenced.
私たちは沈黙を強いられた時に、声の大切さに気づきます。

【Obama】 At the time when women’s voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballet. Yes we can.
女性たちの声が抑え込まれ、希望がはねつけられた時代にあって、立ち上がり声をあげ、参政権を求める女性たちを、彼女(投票を行った106歳の有権者)は、その目で目撃したのです。そう、我々にはできるのです。

【Malala】 I speak not for mysef but for those without voice can be heard.
私は自己主張するのではなく、みんなに届く声を持たない人々の代弁者としてお話します。

【Obama】 She’s a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing- She is 106 years old.
彼女は、この選挙で自分の声を反映させるために列に並んだ何百万人の国民と同じです。1点を除いては。彼女は106歳なのです。

achieve「成し遂げる」、change「変える、変わる」という、揺るぎない決意を表す動詞を多用しています。

【Malala】 And if we want to achieve our goal, then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge, and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness.
私たちが目標を達成したいと思うのなら、知識という武器で一緒に自分たちの力を高めましょう。団結と連帯によって自分たちを守りましょう。

【Obama】 And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.
我々はすでに多くを達成しましたが、それを拠り所にこれからも何かができる、やらなければならないという希望を抱くことができるのです。

【Malala】 Let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.
本とペンを手に取りましょう。それらが私たちの最も強力な武器です。ひとりの子ども、ひとりの教師、1冊の本、1本のペンが世界を変えうるのです。

【Obama】 Through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.
最高の時代と真っ暗闇の時代を体験した末に、彼女(投票を行った106歳の有権者)は、アメリカが変化できることを理解しているのです。そう、我々にはできるのです。
